Newport - Coasters Harbor Island Marina

2024 Winter Berthing
November 1, 2024 - April 30, 2025
$39.50 per foot - Active-duty/Reserve/Retired Military
$41.50 per foot - DoD civilian
Patrons who participate in winter berthing will have the option to receive 10% off their seasonal summer berthing the following year or patrons who are not eligible for retained rights berthing can be placed at the top of their prospective waiting lists for the following summer season.

2025 Sailing & Powerboat Classes
Boating class pre-registration starts on April 1, any registrations emailed before that date will be returned.

 

The MWR Coasters Harbor Island Marina supports recreational boating, berthing, fishing, sail and powerboat training, and provides a launch ramp and other services. It is adjacent to the Officers’ Club, (inside Gate 1) and is open year round. The marina rental fleet is available to qualified individuals on a first come, first served basis and subject to availability determined by weather and the command.

Active duty may reserve boats up to two days in advance. All other eligible patrons may reserve boats one day in advance.

Required Qualifications for Individuals -  SAFETY FIRST 
All renters are required to 
   (1) Show us a NASBLA state or U.S. Coast Guard issued SAFE BOATING CERTIFICATION,
   (2) Pass a local written sailing/powerboat skills and knowledge examination,
   (3) Pass a local check-ride with one of our instructors.
   (4) Patrons who DO NOT HAVE a state certificate may obtain R.I. STATE Certification by; 
               (a) Completing a RI on-line boating course at https://www.boat-ed.com/rhodeisland (separate fee payable to R.I.) and  
               (b) Passing a state proctored exam which we will schedule.

 

BASIC KEELBOAT COURSE: MWR offers a two-week US Sailing Basic Keelboat certification including an online course and about 20 hours sailing on the water. Certification is based on demonstrated skills, knowledge and completion of written exams. Graduates of this course will be issued a US Sailing Basic Keelboat Certification and be qualified to rent MWR’s Rhodes 19 sailboats at Naval Station Newport. Available to eligible patrons 18 years old and older.

 

U.S. POWERBOAT SAFE HANDLING COURSE: MWR offers an 8-10 hour course that consists of a classroom session (about 4 hours) and on-the-water instruction in an 18-foot Maritime Skiff. Students must demonstrate proficiency in powerboat operation and pass a U.S. Powerboating written exam. Graduates of this course will be issued a U.S. Powerboating Certification and be qualified to rent MWR’s 18-foot Maritime Skiff at Naval Station Newport. Available to eligible patrons 18 years old and older.

 

TO FISH ON NAVAL STATION NEWPORT YOU MUST HAVE: A valid ID & base access. An appropriate state license for saltwater fishing, to obtain a RI state license visit: https://rio.ri.gov (this is free for Active-duty personnel – patron will enter CAC information on site and the fee is waived). You must also have a NAVSTA Newport license for fishing. To obtain a NAVSTA license go to the: The Natural Resource Program Manager at the Environments Department located at Building 1 (on base map labeled as 1CC, located next to Public Safety Complex: Fire & Security) 401-841-7607, Monday - Friday 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (no holidays or weekends). There is no fee for the base-fishing license.

 

ADDITIONAL POLICIES FOR FISHING ON BASE: An adult angler in possession of both a NAVSTA Newport and RI freshwater or saltwater fishing license must accompany person under the age of 16 years old.  Fishing license is not required for minors under 16 years old, any blind person or any disabled veteran. Each NAVSTA license shall be valid for a period through December 31 of the issuing year.  Line fishing is the only authorized method for fishing on NAVSTA Newport.

This MWR facility is open to Active-duty personnel, Reservists, Retirees, Dependents, Veterans, DoD civilians, and Contractors with valid ID & base access.  MWR has gone cashless, all major credit cards are accepted.
